I don't recall if it was New Years Eve 1969, 1970 or 1971 but it was at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and the concert was called 'Winter Pop'. Johnny Winter And (Rick Derringer), James Gang, Sha Na Na, Steel River, Poco, Rare Earth and this unknown band called Chilliwack played. Johnny & James Gang were great but I remember vividly Chilliwack being introduced and the radio announcer looking lost as Chilliwack started their set with a keyboard drone while he was talking. They proceeded to blow me away. This freak came out center stage with very long hair and a beard that almost matched it's length playing a ( I think) gold top Les Paul. This friggin' song went on for at least 20 minutes and it had so many dynamics weaving in and out with spacey sounds and effects that I didn't need any mind altering substances that night. The shortest tune they played was Raino and I fell in love with the band that night buying every album that came out since. I have a question though. I'm pretty sure I saw Bill playing a violin that night in that 1st tune so can anybody or Bill himself clarify this for me? It was a long time ago but I have this image in my mind of this guy playing his soul out on it. Man oh man thanks for the memories Bill.
